Chapter 20

I woke up a little after four in the afternoon. Gideon was on his side facing away from me. His steady breathing made him appear to be asleep. I decided it was time for me to leave, but I didn’t want to wake him. I climbed out of bed, retrieved my clothes, and stepped out of the room, closing the door behind me. I stood on the landing and pulled my pants on. I didn’t bother with anything else because I was going straight home to shower and change.

I raked my fingers through my messy hair, but it didn’t help much and frankly, I didn’t care. I started down the stairs, realizing I could hear talking and laughter. The store must’ve been open. It made sense that he might have employees who ran the place for him. I was actually relieved because I would be able to leave the store without figuring out how to unlock the door.

I stepped off the last stair, hesitating when I felt eyes on me. There was a woman behind the front counter. She was pretty, and she was closer to Gideon’s age. The look she was wearing suggested I caught her off guard and annoyed her at the same time. There were a couple other women and a man lingering in the small store.

I decided it would be best just to pretend they didn’t exist. I made a beeline for the door, leaving the awkward situation behind. I tossed my clothes in the passenger seat and started my car. I just wanted to get home and shower. I could care less what Gideon’s flunkies thought of me.
